TLDR

Fall 2023 Final Grades

Final grades for B and C sessions should be posted between December 4 and December 11. All final grades for B and C session must be in by 11:59 on December 11th in order to be included in end-of-semester processing, which includes calculations for Dean’s list recognition, financial aid eligibility, academic good standing, probation, and disqualification. Reminder: Incomplete forms must be approved by your faculty head and sent to cisa@asu.edu before posting the I grade. Incomplete grades should also be posted by December 11th.

Incomplete Grade Requests

As we near the end of the fall semester, you may receive requests from students for an incomplete grade. “The grade of “I” (Incomplete) can only be given by an instructor when a student, who is doing otherwise acceptable work, is unable to complete a course (e.g., final exam or term paper) because of illness or other conditions beyond the student’s control. Unfinished work must be completed with the same instructor except under extenuating circumstances. The completion date is determined by the instructor but may not exceed one calendar year from the date the mark of “I” is recorded.

  • Incomplete grades should only be given if the coursework is mostly finished but a student has run into extenuating circumstances at the end of the term preventing them from completing the final assignment/final/ one or two last assignments.
  • Incomplete grades should not be given to students who are too far behind to catch up or are failing the course. Students should be referred to their Academic advisor to discuss options if they are not eligible for an Incomplete grade.

Process for an Incomplete:

  • Students or instructors can request an incomplete grade. Please note that you are not required to give incomplete grades.
  • An Incomplete Form must be on file before the “I” is posted. Before posting the incomplete grade, please request approval from your faculty head and send the completed form to cisa@asu.edu.
  • The student will not re-enroll in the course; faculty will work with the student on coursework outside of other courses they are teaching.
  • Please be mindful that the student will complete the work in the course shell in which they were originally enrolled.
  • When the student has finished the work (or the deadline you have given them has passed), you will do a grade change in the Faculty Grade Center to the appropriate grade.
  • If the student does not complete the work within one calendar year, the grade will automatically change to an "E".
  • There are several failing grade options depending on the student’s participation in the course.
    • Use the EN grade if a student never participated in the course.
    • Use the E grade if a student participated and completed your course, but failed to earn a passing grade.
    • Use the EU grade if the student participated in your course but later stopped participating, and completed some assignments and/or course activities that were insufficient to make normal evaluation of academic performance possible.

B and C Session course evaluations

Course Evaluation surveys for Session B open on November 21 and Session C on November 17. Please remind your students to complete the survey. If your course has multiple instructors assigned to a section, the students need only to answer the questions to the instructor(s) they have experience with and may skip those that they do not by leaving the questions blank.

If you hear from your students that they do not have a survey available to them or you have any questions, contact Vicki Asato before the survey close date who will troubleshoot and work with UOEEE to resolve the matter.

Spring Course Checklist

We are nearing the end of the fall semester and it’s time to look forward to the spring 2024 semester. Start preparing for spring by reviewing the CISA Course Checklist.

Updates to Syllabi

Syllabus Template

Syllabi will need to be uploaded to both Canvas and Class Search.  Syllabi only uploaded to Canvas are not viewable to students who are not enrolled into the course.  Please feel free to use ‘Uploading a Syllabus’ if you need assistance on how to upload to the ASU Class Search.

Please update your syllabi to reflect the most recent policy on student attendance for military and religious practices:

"Accommodation for Religious Practices or Military Service, Class attendance (either in-person or remotely) is required in the course, and attendance is taken every class session. If you are unable to attend class for any reason, please contact me as soon as possible. Follow the appropriate University policies to request accommodation for religious practices, or to request accommodation for missed assignments due to University-sanctioned activities or active military service."

Academic Integrity

CISA follows a collaborative, evidence-based process to investigate issues of academic integrity utilizing the role of the academic integrity officer (AIO) as a third-party, neutral mediator in all cases with the primary goal to help students in their learning processes and academic success. The AIO is a resource to both faculty and students throughout the process. The CISA academic integrity officer is Kielii Lilavois, Assistant Director of Academic Services, Kielii.Lilavois@asu.edu

Clear Expectations

One of the most important actions you can take is communicating expectations clearly to your students.

  • Dedicate time to talking about course/assignment/exam expectations.
  • Talk to your students about GroupMe and other social media platforms and how to use these tools appropriately.
  • Encourage students to report academic integrity concerns to you or to an academic integrity officer.
  • Post a short video about these issues and your expectations if you don’t have time to dedicate to these topics during class (or do both!).
